Floating toes — toes that do not make contact with the ground while you are standing — are easy to miss and easy to oversell. Here is what the condition actually is, what has been associated with it, and where the research gets more complicated than the usual telling.
What floating toes are
A floating toe fails to reach the floor during standing or walking. It may sit visibly raised, sometimes riding over a neighbouring toe. Researchers score it by photographing the sole of the foot on a scanner and rating each toe as making full contact, incomplete contact, or none.

What has been associated with them
One proposed mechanism is excessive dorsiflexion at the metatarsophalangeal joint, often following from inadequate plantarflexion force. The result is a toe that does not support the foot. Earlier work cited in the literature has linked floating toes to reduced postural stability when standing, reduced weight transfer when walking, and lower toe grip strength.1
Reported causes are varied and mostly outside anyone's control: physical factors, lifestyle, and surgical procedures such as a Weil osteotomy. Footwear with a narrow toe box, existing deformities like bunions or hammertoes, and injury are also commonly cited.

Where it gets complicated
It would be convenient to say floating toes are simply bad for athletes. A 2025 study of 422 collegiate track and field athletes and 136 controls says otherwise.1
The athletes scored significantly better than the controls — fewer floating toes — which the authors read as suggesting a possible performance advantage. Sprinters and jumpers scored better than distance runners.
Then the picture turns. Across the whole sample there was no significant correlation between floating toe score and competitive performance. And among distance runners specifically, the correlation ran the other way: the higher a distance runner's performance, the more pronounced their floating toes tended to be.
The authors describe the relationship as nuanced. We would put it more bluntly: if you are a distance runner, this research does not support the idea that floating toes are holding you back.

What you can reasonably do
- Roomier shoes. A wide toe box costs nothing in performance and lets the toes sit where they would naturally.
- Toe exercises. Pooled data from 13 randomized trials found that intrinsic foot muscle training significantly improved balance, strength, navicular drop and self-reported foot function.2
- A toe stretcher, used actively. In an eight-week trial, everyone wore an orthosis but only half also performed a toe-spread-out exercise. The orthosis-only group changed nothing measurable; the group that added the movement improved on every measure taken.3 Wearing something between your toes is not the part that works.
- A podiatrist, if it persists or hurts. The same 13 pooled trials measured pain and found no significant improvement. Whatever this kind of training does, relieving pain is not what it has been shown to do.
Where Toe-Rx fits
Toe-Rx has been made in Japan since 1988. It holds the toes open wider than you can manage unassisted, and gives them something to close against — the two halves of the movement in the trial above. Five to ten minutes per foot, sitting down, on bare feet. It can be used in water, so it works in the bath.
It is not one-size-fits-all. Three sizes — Small, Medium and Large — in two firmnesses, Soft and Firm. Wearing the wrong size is uncomfortable and can lead to injury, so start from your everyday shoe size and check the sizing guide before ordering. What we will not tell you is that it fixes floating toes. Nobody has tested that. The trial above was in people with hallux valgus, not floating toes, and it used a different device.

24 participants with hallux valgus, not floating toes. Both groups wore an orthosis, so this shows what adding the exercise did — not what the exercise achieves alone. The orthosis used was not Toe-Rx.
